Sky replacement has become remarkably quick, yet realism still depends on what happens after the new one is in place.
A sky overlay can completely change the mood of a landscape, but simply placing dramatic clouds behind the horizon rarely makes the edit believable. What matters is how well the replacement fits the original photo’s lighting, horizon, perspective, color, and atmosphere.
Today’s editing tools can do most of the heavy lifting, but they cannot make every cloud layer work with every photograph. You still need to choose a replacement that suits the scene and adjust it carefully.

Build the Mask Around the Real Horizon

While the new background is clean and sharp, it may appear oddly misplaced against an original image with a blurred background and haze. Luminar’s Sky AI includes a Defocus slider that can soften the replacement to match the image’s depth of field better.

If you add the replacement image manually as a layer, you can use Luminar’s Blur tool instead.
Take a close look at the horizon. Mountains in the distance usually lose some contrast, color, and detail as atmospheric haze builds between them and the camera. If your landscape has a soft, hazy look but the replacement background is sharp and punchy, tone it down so the two parts feel like they belong together.
Water is another common giveaway. Luminar can automatically add sky reflections when water is detected, while its guidance also recommends manually checking the direction and color of the reflections. Finish With a Whole-Image Check
Finally, just take a few moments to look at the picture, without considering the tools used for blending. The background must not look different from other parts of the picture. Look at the lighting and color of the foreground, and then pay attention to the horizon, trees, and reflections. Any discrepancy in those elements indicates that the blend still requires some improvement.
These details matter because realistic compositing is less about creating an impressive backdrop and more about making the viewer forget that anything was changed.
